Buzz Words You are Sick of
1up + Message Boards
06.17.2007 at 2:00 pm
Spiko has started a discussion concerning industry buzz words your tired of hearing. Go take a look.
“I’m sick of hearing how innovative and intuitive things are. Seriously, buy a thesaurus. Has this started to bug anyone else or am I alone in this pet peeve? What are some buzz words you could do without?”
“Emergent Gameplay. Wait, I’m gonna have fun doing something that you didn’t intend for me to do? Lazy programmers, man.”
“Intuitive”
“Ya so…just downloaded this weeks EGM. Wasnt but what? 5 min in before I hear shane talking about how intuitive warhawk is.”
“While it may not be a “buzz word,” per se, it does get overused. Good diction and a thesaurus goes a long way to preventing a word like “intuitive” from getting used in half the reviews out there.”
“Revolutionary, Intuitive, Innovative. All the words above are what I see or hear overused to death not by just editors, but by developers. I know they’re trying to give it some positive buzz about their product, but it seems like all the time that they say that a game mechanic or type of control is revolutionary or innovative . C’mon, if you’re developing another generic FPS or 3rd person shooter, than you have no business using over-the-top phrasing to push your medicore title. I always roll my eyes when I hear these sputtered”
“anything that a PR individual says from EA. but I get annoyed when I hear this: It’s all about choices, Hardcore Gamer, Casual Gamer”
“Umm, “natural” or “instinctive/instinctual.” A lot of time, controls and gameplay that feel natural are just as much about instinct as they are about intuition.”
“Um, it’s instinctive for salmon to swim up stream to spawn. It’s not instinctive to turn on your fucking Wii and swing the controller lick a freaking racket.”
“Flex, impulses, and natural tendencies are instinct, actually. So when a ball is coming at me, it’s instinct to either swat at it with whatever is in your hand or to flee. Please, people, do we have to be so literal with words?”

Other Things Besides Halo 3 Beta
PS3 + 1up + Sony + GamesIndustry.Biz

This might shock and confuse you but there are other things going on besides the Halo 3 Beta cluster. For example,
“Game revenues drop by $1M for Ziff Davis” and “PS3 launch hits Sony profits“. Ok, I didn’t say a lot else was going on.

Release Your Anger
1up + Message Boards
05.15.2007 at 7:24 pm
With the release of Ninja Gaiden many have been sharing their memories of controller throwing bird induced anger. Phoenixdrummer recently started a “Controller Throwing Moments: Most frustrating Gaming Moments.” thread at 1up.com.
“We’ve all had them. Moments in games that are too hard, too annoying, too frustrating.
What are some of your moments you either really wanted to throw the controller, or you actually did throw a controller? (hopefully without needing to call the insurance company.)
For me, some of the moments I can remember.
Block jumping in Mega Man 1 on Iceman’s stage.
Being knocked into a pit by a swooping hawk/eagle in Ninja Gaiden in the NES.
Too many time for me to count in Ninja Gaiden Black…Though I loved that game, I’m planning on purchasing Sigma (I must be sick in the head.)
Trying to kill General Ramm on insane by myself in Gears of War
Trying to beat the Grim Reaper in Castlevania 1. I still to this day can’t do it. The level is so frustratingly hard, I’m terribly weak by the time I get to Death.”
“Well, the first game that came to mind was fighting Mike Tyson in Punch Out on the NES. For the life of me, I could not get the timing down back in the day.
A lot of the big battles involving bosses and summons in Final Fantasy 8 were difficult, but the controller throwing moments always came while playing the card game, and trying to collect each and every one (which I did).
Another moment would be Elite Beat Agents’ Jamiroquai track.
The above mentioned Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden series on the NES had numerous, violent moments for me as well.
…I almost forgot the first time I actually did throw the controller, and that would be upon completing Karnov on the NES. Black screen with “congratulations” spelled wrong. NICE!”
“It’s really bad design that frustrates me more than my own lack of skill. All my controller throwing moments come from that.
If I don’t make the jump and it’s my fault, I’m cool with it. If I don’t make the jump and it’s the developers clunky control system, that gets me mad.”
“Super Ghouls N Ghosts. The entire game is a soul-tearing exercise in masochism.”

Pokemon Party

04.28.2007 at 4:02 pm
What’s a gamer living in the mid-west to do? All the good gaming parties take place on the coasts. It’s not fair, at least give us something in Chicago. Now that that’s out of my system the next Poke-item is the NYC release party. Due to being a few miles away I’m forced to live vicariously through the guys at Joystiq, Kotaku, and 1up. Hit each site for the coverage. Lucky kids.

Pokemon Review Wrapup
Review + IGN + 1up + GameSpot
04.28.2007 at 3:30 pm
The phenomenon that is Pokemon hit this week. Let’s start the Poke-coverage with a quick review wrap up.
“Yes, the series’ fourth generation is largely the same as the past three — but it’s also, without question, the best to date.”
“In short, the creators have gone out of their way to preserve the aesthetics of the series while quietly, subtly improving on them. The same also holds true for the underpinnings as well — for the gameplay. On the surface, Diamond & Pearl could be any other Pokémon: Players control an ambitious young monster trainer on an RPG-style quest through a small island infested with pugnacious creatures, collecting new critters as part of a mission to catch (or at least spot) them all.”
“Hardcore gamers tend to turn their nose up to the Pokémon series, but the secret of its success is that it isn’t designed for the hardcore. It’s for everyone else, and let’s face it: There’s more of them there are of us. But why does it matter? Sure, it’s easy to forget that the games themselves aren’t the same thing as the world-consuming, soul-destroying marketing juggernaut spawned by an unassuming pair of Game Boy cartridges so long ago. Look beyond the cheaply-made anime and the overblown collectible tie-ins, though, and you’ll find that the foundation upon which the whole endeavor has been constructed is an enjoyable and often addictive RPG with a fantastic social element.”
Score – 8.5
“Much to the delight of Pokémaniacs the world over, Nintendo and Game Freak have finally brought a proper Pokémon game to the Nintendo DS with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and it delivers much of what a fan would desire—a richer, more detailed presentation, the ability to battle and trade Pokémon over the Internet, and of course, more than 100 brand-new Pokémon to collect.”
“What’s probably the most significant new feature in Diamond and Pearl is online play, which lets you battle, trade, and chat with other players over the Internet.”
“Between the 100-plus new Pokémon, the improved presentation, and the online play, this is a must-have game for established fans. The new features also make this the most well-rounded Pokémon game to date, and if you’ve never dabbled in the world of Pokémon before, there’s no better game to start with.”
Score – 8.5
“For a game that’s literally sold countless millions of copies over the past ten years, it’s pretty amazing to discover gamers who have yet to experience what Pokemon is all about. Under its kid-friendly, thick sugary coating lies a deceptively deep and addictive design that encourages players to create collections of highly marketable creatures of various species. The core mechanic is an adventure with role-playing game battle mechanics — these creatures will fight for their owner using their abilities in a turn-based interface, where players choose the best mode of attack or defense that’ll get them through the brawl. Winning battles will earn these creatures experience which will, in turn, advance their levels and increase their capabilities…as well as earn their owners some coin for purchases at the shops.”
“The biggest issue is its hard-to-shake feeling of deja vu — most of what players do in the single player experience is identical to the adventuring laid out for the gamers in previous versions. That “explore the world, fight gym leaders, stop the evil Team” storyline progression hasn’t changed at all in Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl.”
“After ten years of Game Boy Pokemon catching and battling, the core game mechanic still holds up as an addictive game design — tons of strategic depth and gameplay that’s incredibly rewarding; it’s one of those games that offers an enormous sense of accomplishment for even the littlest things performed.”
Score – 8.5
Average score of the three – 8.5

PS3 Europe - Honey Moon Over?
PS3 + 1up + Joystiq + Kotaku + Fanboys + PS3 Fanboy
04.05.2007 at 8:56 am
The big fanboy heart breaking news this week is the GamesIndustry.biz report that PS3 sales have fallen 82% in the UK.
“A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: “Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent.”"
On top of that sales of the top two games, Resistance and Motorstorm have dropped by over 60%.
Here’s a wrap up of what everyone is saying.
“What did anyone expect? Sony selling 165,000 PS3 consoles week after week? Such a drop-off is only to be expected since at least 80% of those first week sales were pre-orders made many months before.”
“The uk launch was literally a great example of “EVERYONE WHO WANTED ONE BOUGHT ONE”
and thats about it”
“That is still very good. 30,000 is more than they sell in Japan every week and I am sure it is still the best selling console in the UK this week. It’s also one third of what the 360 and Wii managed to do IN THEIR FIRST WEEK. Sorry it couldn’t break the alltime record for consoles sold in the UK two weeks in a row.”
“Expected fanboy comments: “That’s because everyone who wants one already got one lol” “599 US Dollars!” “Idiot, this is for UK sales.” “Oh. Then… 425 British Pounds!” “Idiot.” “What’s wrong with those people? PS3 is great, they should all be buying them out.” Any others I miss?”
“They can’t use the stock shortage line as they are everywhere at the moment. They should be quite pleased that they managed to get one to everyone that wanted/could afford one at the crazy crazy rip off price.”
“”Show me a single store in the UK with a game system, and I will give you 1200 pounds sterling”….Its sony, they will find some way to put a spin on it, good or bad, I don’t think sony really cares…”
“Only the diehard Sony fans are buying the PS3. The highly sought after “causal gamer” could not care less about the PS3 and the Cell Processor, Blu-Ray, etc…all they see is the high sticker price. GTA 3 brought these casual gamers to the PS2 in droves, but I’m not so sure that GTA IV can pull off the same trick for the PS3, especially since it will be available on the cheaper 360.”
“Maybe Sony should have done like Nintendo and purposely create a lack in the consoles, so people feel the need to buy one right away?”
“All those who wanted it have it. Now we are seeing those who wanted it but, didn’t have the money at the time hence the 25 - 30k sales. If the console was in demand then it would have sold out and continued to sell out for weeks to come. There are millions of people in the uk and indeed 3 milion of them now have DS’. This is why Sony are taking longer than expected to spin the news. They can’t talk about availability because then they look like hypocrites. They can’t claim to be shifting units because the Wii sold over 300k units in the first week alone and continues to sell well even now. There has been no lul in Wii sales at all. They sell as fast as Nintendo make them. I expect a price cut to be announced within a week or two and for this to be spun as a positive thing. Something along the lines of a manufaturing breakthrough meaning cheaper parts (probably lead by the 65nm cells). I only feel sorry for those that bought the console on day one. If sony want to take back the market, then they will have to royaly shaft those loyal fans on the price!”
“The sales drop is to be expected. I’m surprised that the numbers are still as high as they are. Those numbers bring the UK real close to 200,00 which i think was their innitial shipment.”
“I agree with Nick in that there is anything to worry about from these numbers. You can’t expect huge sales with the cost of the console as it is. I’d begin to worry if PS3 sales are still in the doldrums at the end ofthe year.”
“Obviously a decrease OMG!!! No decrease guys just another 165,000 people bought one, my god the media are Sony haters lol!!! True though.
Wonder what the Wii and 360 sell on average per week now, if you could show that in your blog i would appreciate it!!!”
“What can anyone say? It is what it is. The problem isn’t the hardware, it isn’t what the system can or can’t do. The problem is simply the price. Its just too high. I don’t know how many people would buy a $600 Xbox360 either. I own all of the systems, for me it isn’t an issue. But I know for a lot of folks this gen is a one or the other situation. Most of my single system owning friends have a 360.”
“5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Here come the Wiitards & Xboys. Bring it on bitchs !”
“So this is what it looks like when fanboys from each company go at eachothers throat, Lol! :)”
“Its just a sad day that these fools dont see it. Look at the signs you zombies!! Trade in your PS3’s and get a 360 or a Wii.. Its already too late to trade in your PSP’s.. and soon it wont even matter! Dont you see the fall of the name PLAYSTATION???”
“All I hear is excuses. Well the PS3 is selling better than the 360 during the same launch window. Yet they refuse to aknowledge that the 360 in the US and Europe is doing very well, that the 3rd major territory Japan is Anti-Microsoft, that the 360 had major shortages at launch and for about 6-8 months afterwards. All that considered plus the fact that the 360 had average to poor launch titles. I would say the 360 is doing quite well. Also dont forget that the Wii is whippin that Ass and it launched at roughly the same time as the PS3. Then I hear PS3 fanboys saying stuff like DMC4, or VF5, or Ace Combat, etc… weren’t that good on the Playstation, or they were gonna suck anyways, etc… STFU U insecure little maggots. U know dang well if Halo3 or Forza 2, or Mass Effect, or Gears of War etc came over to the PS3 U would cream your panties… Get over it the 360 rocks and its a good thing that these games went multiplatform. Why should I be forced to pay for Blue-Ray and Cell to enjoy these games? Learn how to share fuckers. Selfish pricks. I’m not mad that those games will be on the PS3. WTF!!! This is classic Playstation Polesmoker attitude right here: All I hear is wait till Home comes out U will see. Wait till MGS4 or FF13 comes out U will see. Wait till 2008. How much longer do we have to wait. In the US and Japan we waited a year for the damn thing to launch after the 360 was already available. Europe waited almost a year and a half. We waited that long to get the same gaming experience if not less than what the 360 already offers and U want us to pay $200.00 more for the PS3. Plus the online service blows Ass compared to Live, and the game library sucks compared to the 360. Ya great idea, lets keep waiting. No thank you. I would rather “Jump In” with a 360 right now, then “Play Beyond” with a PS3 in 2008. Good night Sony Sausage Smugglers!!!!!”
“So here all of the 360 Sony hating fanboys congregating!!! No where to be seen on the “Microsoft Defends the 120GB HD’s Price” NEWS POST!! LOL!!! I guess whatever is convenient for all of you fanboys works.”

PS3 Launch - Some of our Favorite Stories and Comments
PS3 + 1up + Kotaku + Fanboys + PS3 Fanboy + Destructoid
03.24.2007 at 7:38 pm
The PS3 has launched abroad and depending on what team you play for the launch was either a success or a horrible failure. Which amazes me since there was only one launch but oh well, start the spin, er, news posts!
In no real order:
Xbox Crashes French PS3 Launch - Kotaku
“At the PLAYSTATION 3 launch event in Paris, Microsoft found an opportunity to do a little guerilla marketing by sending French gamers queueing up for a PS3 a kind reminder via boat.”
-Comments
“lol! wow, microsoft marketing people are a bunch of dicks!”
“Absolutely hilarious. To be honest, though, Sony is killing themselves with their own product even without the help of MS.”
“pwned! No Nintendo party crasher?”
Easing Tired Bums At The UK PS3 Launch - Kotaku
“Seems there were around 50 or so people there for the bash, but in the midst of a cold, British night, conditions weren’t ideal. Luckily, some friendly chaps were on-hand giving out free camping chairs to the tired, would-be customers.”
-Comments
“ahahahaha, between this and the boat, I <3 the 360 marketing team right now. I think they smell blood in the water.."
"Last time I checked, you badmouthed eachother in politics... I'm sure some may see it differently, but microsoft seems to be making an ass out of themselves. (boats with MS banners roaring past the ps3 release, chairs that have hidden meaning for PS3 Shoppers) Next MS is going to accuse the PS3 of druggin and beating hookers, and leaving them in the grass along the interstate to die. I can see it now..."Hookers are people too!""
UK Retailer Happy With PS3 Supply And Demand - Kotaku
“Sony’s PS3 launch hasn’t exactly been gangbusters. Still UK retailer GAME is pleased with the supply and the demand. There are more than enough consoles to go around.”
-Comments
“Yeah; ok keep spinning negativity on the whole thing; the truth is starting to come out about the european territory launch”
“I was wondering how exactly this situation could go through the spin machine and allow the speaker to retain a level of dignity, this is actually a pretty good attempt - AND they managed to smear the 360! Good work guys and girls.. now, back to reality, this is a horrendous, worldwide catastrophe for Sony, surely?”
“So the “marketing director” for a retailer that sells PS3s is telling us that Sony “withheld the release of the PS3 in order to build up stock levels for launch.” I think she means Sony “withheld the release of the PS3 to rip out the PS2 Chipsets (Emotion Engine) and jack up the price of the PS3 for launch.”"
“I’m not sure if this can be considered an honest comment from an official or just positive PR spin. While it is agreed that a good supply is essential on any launch day, it seems to me that if a product does not “sell out of stock” it would considered “bad” I suppose in a media and PR sense it’s bad, but from a financial stand point it does seem the better path to go, however Sony does have far more units available then Microsoft & XBOX360, i recall they mentioned around from 400-600 unit which includes pre-orders, if Sony Sells at leased half of that shipment by end of april, well…its profitable, although how much of that will make a dent in it’s spiralling debts in light of the recent “free HD TV” give-away stunt, which will give a strange signal to all those purchasing/or thinking of it, wondering why they didn’t get one is…..debatable…. ”
Worldwide PS3 Launch: Some Bang, Some Whimper - 1up
“Britain: The Good, Australia: The Bad, France: The Ugly
-Comments
“I find the stunt in Paris childish. Peter Moore is at it again. I remember when Sonic showed up at a Sony event when the PS2 was about to launch to say please buy a Dreamcast. It didnt work then and we gonna see if its gonna work now. Get over it Peter.”
“at my local eb store here in aussie land… number my bro was number 1 of like… 4? was 5 but some guy left to get the number one spot we showed up at 11:30…considering when I bought the Wii, I was 1 of like 50-60?”
PS3 launch fails across the pond; Where is your Phil Harrison now? - Destructoid
“Last night was the midnight launch of the PlayStation 3 for our overseas brethren in France and England, and the crowds that turned out were dismal, to say the least. Apparently one tenth of the people expected to be there actually showed up, and Sony was left with literal barges full of their newest console, at least in the land of wine and cheese.”
-Comments
“PS3 launch was a fizzer in Australia too. The major event had only 40 or so people buying a PS3 and maybe about 100 or more people looking on, getting free food, massages etc. Last year the 360 had over 1000 people at the same venue. The game sites and news over here could only report it as ‘modest’. You’d think at least a few journalists would use the world ‘failure’. But apparently none of them have any balls.”
“The official London event only had 120(ish) people turn up, which was a bit gutting. But everyone who did line up in Virgin Megastore did get a free Sony Bravia 46″ HDTV for nowt. response from forums here have generally praised sony for giving the TVs away but derided them for using it to take away coverage from the lackluster launch and we still don’t want the PS3… but do want the TVs.”
“this is living!”
Congratulations, Europe! Tell us your PS3 story! - PS3 Fanboy
“This is just a note to let all of the territories know that, at least a midnight our time, we’re going to give you a big “Congratulations!” flag and let you wave it all you want.”
-Comments
“Are you guy retarded? Barely anyone in Europe wanted a PS3.”
“Yeah! Just got my Aussie PS3! Awesome!!!”
“PS3 FTW! its too good just got mine and its the best purchase ive ever made for a console!”
“I just find it funny that some people are so against Sony that everything is bad whatever they are. In the US launch, people were killing each other to get their hands on a PS3 and they say that’s bad. In the UK launch, there is so much PS3’s to go around so people won’t be killing each other, and they still say it’s bad. So, tell me, what would have been a GOOD launch?”
GAME says: PS3 launch stronger than the others! - PS3 Fanboy
“A good supply of consoles leads to less dissatisfied consumers. Says Anna Macario of GAME: “It’s very unusual that we’re going to be in a situation where we’ve got enough stock to fulfil demand in the short term – that’s never happened before.” She says that there won’t (read: shouldn’t) be any negativity against Sony for not supplying enough units.”
-Comments
“This is a rather pathetic attempt at spin. This was news YESTERDAY. All this tells us is Sony has the supply. We know nothing of the demand. Stop bullshitting us.”
“Sony should be praised for providing enough units. It’s really annoying to not be able to get a console, such as the case with the Wii still. I can’t imagine waiting in line for nothing *holds back smart ass remark*.”
“LOL its funny the ps3 can’t sit, stand, walk or even talk without some xbot getting upset about it. for the love of god if you people are so confident that the ps3 will fail then by all means let it fail! why the hell to you people find a great need to try and shit on everything the ps3 does if you are sure its going to flop? why try so hard to shit of something you don’t even plan to buy? is it because ps3 is strikingly similar to the ps2 in its early days and history might repeat itself? and you somehow feel threaten”
The Paris debacle — PS3 launch style! - PS3 Fanboy
“You’ve got to admit your defeats as well as your successes. Stepping away from the Fanboy section of this website’s title, we’re going to go over what Sony planned in Paris, then what became of what would have been totally awesome if done in the United States.”
-Comments
“Keep in mind that since there was actually adequate supply for this launch, people can forgo the insanity of the North American launch. The hardcore fans knew that since they’d reserved, they were guaranteed a console, and others that wanted one knew supply was good enough that they wouldn’t need to camp out two weeks in advance and riot.”
“Sony launched their console the way launches are supposed to be done. They screwed up in the US and had it not been right before Xmas they would have been better off waiting a little while so they could have released more games along side the PS3 at launch and had more consoles available. Of course fanboys everywhere are reporting that the PS3 launch is lame and nobody wants one. Idiots… Its damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Not enough supply and people whine or a healthy supply and fanboys claim that nobody wants one.”
“That’s because fanboys always need something to cry about :/ Seriously, they need to do something other than complain about their competition’s console and move out of their mom’s basement or something.”
“Print the WHOLE story, lol. They expected 3000 people and 40 showed up. Ya, the rest of the 2960 people ordered it online. That’s pretty pathetic, I don’t give a shit how much you like Crazy Ken, lol. Just sayin…”

The Fight Begins – The best fighting game?
1up + Fanboys + Blog
03.10.2007 at 7:46 am
1up’s James Mielke has posted a “fair” comparison of Virtua Fighter and Tekken.
“Thin-skinned Virtua Fighter fans bristle at the question, due mostly to Tekken’s decade-long dominance at home, when they can hardly believe how such a dialed-in-combo-heavy game could usurp their favorite, finessed game in terms of popularity in North America. On the flipside, whiny Tekken fanatics with an inferiority complex drilled into them by years of listening to haughty Virtua Fighter acolytes go on about how their fighter is infinitely deeper are almost always defensive to a fault”
“why wouldn’t you compared Virtua Fighter to Tekken? Espeically when Tekken has ripped off everything Sega AM2 has done for, oh, over a decade. Besides, they’re both 3D fighters with very much in common. See whiny Tekkenbot cry “Quit comparing this to virtua fighter! it plays like a totally different game.”
“The statement “It’s clearly evident that the reviewer has a rather large bias towards VF5″ is 100 percent accurate though, and not because there’s an AI drone found in Sega World South named “Milky Pai.” I have a rather large bias towards VF5 because it’s a better game. If someone put a bowl of piss in front of you next to a bowl of chicken noodle soup, I’d bet you’d be biased towards one too. It’s not rocket science that I love good games.”
We will refrain from posting our own “fair” judgment and simply ask the people what they think is the best fighter.
