A 80 gb PS3? Fanboys Attack

GameSpot + Message Boards + Fanboys
07.09.2007 at 11:04 am

Electronics are updated, offers change, it’s part of life yet some people think they are getting ‘ripped off’. Thankfully there are people of sound mind and body.

New 80gb PS3? We Launch Owners Got Screw …

“Why didn’t sony just do this in the first place?! Now those of who have the ps3 already are being over shadowed by a new ps3 with more gigs..PLUS A GAME FOR THE SAME PRICE WE PAID FOR THE 60GB! That’s screwed up man….really screwed us over. We should be able to turn our ps3’s in for the 80gb one. You know that wont happen though. Those of you who own the ps3 already…what do you think?”

“It doesn’t bother me at all. we all new a price drop would come at one point or another. The price dropping is not making me enjoy my PS3 any less. I’m sure launch360 ownersfelt screwed when MS released the elite, but again, they can still play the same games so who cares.”

“OMG, I bought a NeoGeo ages ago for the same price as the PS3, and now Sony rips me off by including a bigger harddrive and a free game!!”

“I bought a PS2 at launch for $300 and now you can get it for like $150, but you don’t here me complaining.”

“dude, this thread is out of line. the same thing happens with everything! all of the early xbox owners are missing out on the elite, early iPod addopters keep having to upgrade their iPods, why should the PS3 be any different. you are over reacting. calm the F*** down.”

“Why are people such babies about this? If you’re upset that you bought it before the price dropped, then you shouldn’t have bought it. Easy as that. Get over it.”

“First of all you’re missing my point. I’m not mad about the 80gb…I’m slightly upset that it was released not eeven a year after the original system. I mean 360 took awhile to release it’s elite(2yrs to be exact).”

MS Drops Big Cash

Xbox360 + PS3 + Kotaku + Fanboys + Comments + Microsoft
06.18.2007 at 9:54 am

Kotaku is reporting that the amount dropped on exclusive GTA content is $50,000,000. That’s a pretty good sum but more fun to us is the good ol’ fashion fanboy slug feast that ensues.

“I can’t imagine this will have a big impact on the PS3 version, most people probably won’t download it anyway. Wasted money.”

“It’s a lot of money, but if MS are certain it will help convince people into buying a 360 instead of a PS3 then it could be money well spent. And if it works they likely won’t have to pay for any more exclusives as they will have such a large install base everyone will want to be publishing on 360.”

“Yeah Rusty, most people wont download it anyway, I mean who the hell “downloads” ANYTHING nowadays!? heh heh heh (sigh).”

“Hahaha. Yah. ’cause if it’s anything people hate, it’s more content for one of the most successful franchises in gaming history. You’re right. Nobody’s interested.”

“lol, Microshit is so desperate.”

“lol, Sony fapboys are so desperate.”

“No not really. Our console happens to be future-proof. The Xbox 360 is going to be a huge fiasco just like its predecessor. If you, despite this 50 million dollar move, don’t get it, that’s your problem.”

“It’ll get better for Sony’s part soon. Sony has basically won the HD format war now as well. Prepare for onslaught, Microshit losers”

“Oh cry about it, I don’t care much about how YOUR “war” will be going, I’ll be enjoying the good content of all three brands, thank you.”

“Our console? Hahahaha. God, that’s rich. So very desperate to belong. Our console happens to be future-proof. Incidentally also present-proof, past-proof, sale-proof, profit-proof and reasonable-price-proof.”

It pretty much goes on like that for while. It’s a pretty good shot-out.

360 Shadowrun, $10 More

Xbox360 + Kotaku + Fanboys
05.16.2007 at 9:17 am

With the news that the Xbox 360s copy of Shadowrun is 10 bucks more than the PC version comes the avalanche of unhappy posters.

Kotaku

“So to sum that up: “We can charge what ever we like so STFU. Also we have to pay more to advertise the game because it’s exclusive so it’s your fault. NOW GIB M$ MUNNIES!!!”"

“I honestly don’t think they care much about the game at all. What they DO care about, is testing their little theory of how their little PC + 360 unified gaming structure is going to work, and what better way than a FPS, which is one of the key gaming types on both those systems.

Now, people on the Xbox are used to paying that price. Sure, not a very good excuse, but if they can nab an extra ten bucks, why the hell not, says MS. On the other side of the coin, all those people who are just buying new PCs preloaded with Vista might be looking for games ‘optimized’ for the system, and at an okay price point, that’s what they’re hoping people will pick up.

Honestly, if they get a hundred thousand people testing and playing the system, they can see what it looks like in action, see how they can market it better, etc. Never said anywhere this is some awesome plan or anything, but it almost feels like they’re using it for a test.”

“Stupid consumers (myself included) for letting them make it the standard price!
Before, it was to cover development costs… With a cheaper PC version, can’t exactly use that argument here!”

“Weak.

It’s priced that way because that’s how everyone else prices their games? I wasn’t aware that the industry standard was to price a multiplayer-only game at the same price as full-fledged games (with both singleplayer and multiplayer aspects).

To be fair, singleplayer-only games are fair game for full price, but I’ve always considered the multiplayer aspect of a game to be secondary (whether it is more fun that the singleplayer or not). Perhaps I’m wrong to think so, but the Warhawk comparison is a good one, considering that Sony plans to price that lower after scrapping the singleplayer campaign.

I would like to play the game, but it’s really not worth that much to me. I’ll wait for it to be $30 over Steam when they realize that plenty of people share that mentality.”

“You people arent even looking at the product. For only $10, youre not just getting a green case (superior to blue), youre getting better box art, and for the money, its a deal. Then again, i bought a PS3 before the inevitable price cut and will likely pick up flOw soon so you might not wish to seek my counsel on financial matters.”

“I’ve got no way to explain the disparity, but I can say I’m not that interested in buying either version. And frankly, I’m not feeling MS pushing people all that hard to buy it either.”

“I know this might break your heart, but Microsoft is a business. They’ll charge whatever they think people will pay. Apparently they think they can push the most PC units at $50 and the most 360 units at $60. And judging by the success of the company, they’re probably right. If you don’t want to pay that much - don’t buy it. Honestly, it’s as simple as that. Why waste your virtually breath whining?”

“PC users need the $10 after spending over $2000 on a rig that can play these games!”

“Paying 10 more for the console version is not that bad when you factor the price you have to pay for both vista and the pc. But, what is uber lame is the high price for multiplayer only. Look at half-life2, you pay 49$ for the game, and you get like 10 other games and mods like cs, dod, cs source, RICOCHET!(ew), and others. I wouldn’t pay 60 bucks for cs and I played that for years and I still play it, so why would I pay MS 60$ for the right to get my ass kicked by people who can play the game with keyboard and mouse.”

“The reason they charge more for the 360 version (which is no doubt the worse of the two versions) is because the vast majority of 360 owners have proven how much they just bend over and accept it in the past. It’s not complicated at all.”

“Here’s the thing. Companies are spending stupid money on games (how I don’t know as salaries and equipment don’t add up to nearly what the budgets say is being spent). They need to sell at an inflated price to re-coup that initial investment end of story. Even then they need to sell in excess of a million copies to break even. This can’t continue as the economics don’t add up. Some people somewhere are getting insanely rich on these 20 million budgets and it isn’t the salary men that make the games!”

“Yeah I thinkI will be giving shadow run a miss. Seriously publishers have to standardize thier pricing. I bought CC3 for the PC as well because it is cheaper than the price being qouted for the forthcoming xbox360 release. I love my 360 but more and more PC gaming is drawing me away from it.”

“… strop crying…

nobody would be saying anything if the pc version didn’t exist… cause 59.99$ is what you usually pay for a “current gen” (not next cause it’s OUT god dammit :) game…

Stop expecting stuff to be free cause it will never be… you don’t have to buy it if you think it’s too expensive… I’m sick of people crying about stuff on the marketplace and how expensive games are… get out of your parents basement, get a job, or find another hobby…

just like that do you know how much the “shadowrun” books cost?”

Are You a Fanboy?

Fanboys + GamePro
04.30.2007 at 12:28 pm

Here’s a subject that’s close to the heart. GamePro has up a list of 6 points to help identify if you fit into the bad breed of fanboys.

How To Tell If You’re a Fanboy

Highlights include…

1. You become upset when something you like is questioned.

Fanboys almost universally interpret criticism as a bad thing, generally responding with hostility. The irony of this is that unbridled enthusiasm benefits no one in the long run. When consumer products are blindly followed without criticism, improvement is frustrated and buyers ultimately get the shaft. It’s in everyone’s best interest to honestly evaluate what’s being sold, be that a system made by Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.

2. You are intellectually dishonest.

If you truly believe you are always right and can never be wrong, you — my friend — are intellectually dishonest. Common side affects include an unwillingness to hear out opposing arguments, an overlying fear of facts, a rejection of the truth, and opining without requisite context or knowledge (even worse, without thoroughly reading the issues being discussed!).

5. You bring nothing new to a conversation.

Shipped consoles versus sold? We’ve all heard that tired argument a thousand times. Does it really matter? If you feel strongly about a subject, make an informed, creative case while backing it up with facts and cross-references. Look to enlighten the argument, not rehash the same points ad nauseum. Better yet, try a different approach if you feel you’re not being heard. If “you suck” is the best counter argument you have, you’re not even trying.

A-Holes, We All Have One

Fanboys + Game Almighty
04.30.2007 at 10:31 am

Game Almighty has up a great “How to be an Online A-hole” guide with 12 wonderful nuggets of advice.

Highlights include…

Tip #3: Ask Questions

Upon first entering a game, make sure you immediately ask pointless questions like, “Where is everyone from?” and “I’m 26, how old is everyone?” If someone says they’re over 30, immediately call them old and insist that they’re a loser because they still play videogames. Little touches like, “Oh, so you don’t like chicks anymore?” are also good. Bonus points can be earned for ridiculing where people live. Please use stereotypes when talking about people from the south. A sure way to be considered an a-hole is to insist that all people from southern states sound ignorant. Place special emphasis on mocking all the accents you hear.

Tip #5: Talk to Yourself

You know those voices in your head? Let them out for all the world to hear. Have a running monologue that makes little sense, yet is peppered with insults about specific players.

Tip #5A: Talk to Your Roommate

This is a great one that really messes with people. Have a conversation with your roommate about any topic you want. Other players who are forced to listen to you will ultimately think you’re talking to someone in game, yet they’ll never hear a response. The longer you have this conversation, the better. The more pointless you can make the topic, the faster people will consider you an a-hole.

Tip #11: Act as if You’re Playing The Worst Game Ever Designed

This one is often overlooked yet especially effective. Constantly ridicule the game you’re playing, insulting the level design, the weapons, the models, the lighting, the writing, etc. When players start asking you why in the hell you’re playing it and demand you go play something else, you can add a brown star to your a-hole chart.

Tip #12: Ready Up!

When waiting in the lobby for a multiplayer game to start, yell for people to press the Ready button. Tolerate no delay. Demand players be kicked by the host. As an added bonus, refuse to Ready up after you’ve successfully managed to get everyone prepared for battle, insisting that you won’t play with a bunch of losers.

It’s funny because it’s true.

GameSpot / PS3 Bias - Calling All Cars Edition

PS3 + Review + GameSpot + Fanboys + Comments
04.29.2007 at 8:31 am

GameSpot’s most recent PS3 atrocity concerns the review for David Jaffe’s Calling All Cars which at 6.7 clocked in a number of ‘review points’ below IGN’s 8.5 and 1up’s 8.0. The disparity in score was so eye opening that it even prompted a rebuttal from David Jaffe himself.

“The first two I can live with, they feel fair and make sense. I am very, very proud of those reviews. Although, I have to say, when I hear the 1up guys on the podcast saying the game is the best on PSN AND saying that it’s closing in on being one of the top 3 download games out there, it does seem 8 is a bit low…but what the hell…8 is good in my book, so thank you guys!

I’m not so keen on the GAMESPOT review, and who would be? It simply feels unfair and simply wrong. Granted, why would I not say that? I am the director of the game they are saying is simply ‘fair’. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.”

Here are some comments taken from his blog.

“does anyone even take that site serious? but im still gettin CAC. and the 1up yours guys fuckin loved your game. they made me wana play it even more. and i usually dont even like them.”

“I agree, Gamespot’s score is really unfair in almost every aspect. It seems as if they reviewed it like a full blown $60 retail game. When compared to other downloadable games, CAC should not(IMO) be lower than an 8. The game is a lot of fun(from what I have seen/read), and that is what’s important.”

“If nothing else, this review controversey will help to get more people interested in your game :) But I do agree that Gamespot’s review is a joke, look at a game like Counter-strike, everyone only plays on 3-4 maps anyways!”

“That’s some poor journalism. I mean really, you can’t just apply the same standard to every game up for review and have it be a good (or fair) indicator of quality. You wouldn’t judge a kid’s game the same way you would judge GOW, they’ve got completely different aims. So it is with CaC. You’ve said a gazillion times that you’re not out to make another GOW, that you intended CaC to be a fun pick-up game you can play with friends. It seems Gamespot completely ignored that, and that’s a shame. For being who they are, as a prominent gaming website, they should have done a lot more digging on the history and intent of CaC, but they didn’t. It is unfortunate that your game had to come under fire from that type of rigid mentality, but I don’t think that one clearly uninformed and apathetic opinion is going to bring you down.”

This isn’t the first time GameSpot has low balled a PS3 game. Matter of fact it’s been an ongoing trend since the PS3 launched. So much so that they now ban their own readers from even mentioning a “bias” on their forums.

“Complain about “teh bias!”. You’re entitled to disagree with a review on Gamespot or any other site. You can even post your own score and/or review on Gamespot. What has gotten out of hand are the fits being thrown about some sort of anti Sony bias, or even more ridiculous the fits / conspiracy theories about Microsoft owning Gamespot. They don’t, it’s a fact. Hard to imagine folks believe this stuff with no proof.

Anyway the screaming and whaling has at times gotten out of hand to the point that the PlayStation 3 forum sometimes is more of a pout fest rather than a forum to discuss the PlayStation 3 and related games. The Playstation 3 forum is here for folks to talk about the Playstation 3, and related games, not a fanboy support group. As such threads about “OMG the bias!” and such are not allowed. ”

Nice to know that instead of backing up their reviews they simply ban the topic.

Anyway, here are comments from a post on GameSpot entitled “Ouch! Calling All Cars.” which I assume will lead to the banning of many users and the closing of the thread.

“They said the game is short on content but they seem to ignore the fact that this is a $10 (or less?) arcade title. They gave a game like Geometry Wars for the 360 an 8.2 and it is actually an even shorter game than Calling All Cars. I don’t understand there scoring on this title at all.”

“Why does GS’ review not surpriise me? Jaffe mentioned just this sort of attitude in a recent interview. Today’s gamers are too concerned about having more of everything: more weapons, more maps, more cars, more everything. No one focuses on the quality of what’s there anymore. Moreover, GS seems to have blatantly ignored the fact that this is a $10 downloadable multiplayer game. If you end up playing the same 4 maps 1000s of times online and end up having a blast, why would you need more? At least IGN and 1UP got it right.”

“You know Im starting to believe that had this game been released on the 360 the reviewers would have been drueling all over it. Sorry to say but I actally believe there is some bias reflected in this review. I normally dont by into the whole bias thing but with all the things that the other reviews say as opposed to what GS says, Im gonna say GS is wrong about this one, and yes Im gonna play the bias card, and the mods can shove off if they dont like it.”

“No one who comes here regularly is surprised of course. I value GS’s reviews for exclusive PS3 games as much as I value used toilet paper.”

“If everyone else says its good and one idiot (Im looking at you GS) says its bad should we believe the one voice thats different? NO. I think this will be a lot of fun and cant wait to play it. And the reviewer clearly missed the mark here, but I wont let that stop me from playing it.”

“Becuase GS isnt staffed by Journalists. They’re just jerks with an agenda.”

So what’s up with GameSpot? Are they bias? Are they trying to be hard hitting? Are they trying to drum up controversy in order to gain hits? Why the large disparity in scores?

Special Note: GameSpot, if your trying to bring in hits through controversy you should really check these guys out. They’re the masters at having horrible reviews to start controversy.

Kotaku Unfairly Bashes Circuit City

Kotaku + Fanboys
04.11.2007 at 4:41 pm

Yesterday Kotaku posts about the “guaranteed IN-STORE 2pm or get a $20 gift card” promotion at Circuit City. Today they’re pitching a fit because it was sold out and they didn’t get their $20. The promotion was for it to be in-store by 2pm not in-stock. So basically Kotaku is bashing a store for doing exactly what they advertised.

This is another example of people that are never happy no matter what. Give them a bar of gold they’ll be upset it wasn’t two bars.

To make matters worse the majority of the comments are whining right along in chorus with a few exceptions, which are found below.

“Umm… it seems pretty reasonable to me, and the ad was pretty damn clear cut. The ad CLEARLY intoned it was regarding the time they receive the game, not whether they sell out on that day. C’mon, you guys are just trying to find something to bitch about here.”

“I don’t see how people can be upset about this. Did you really expect to just walk in and have them hand you $20 for free? The advertisement pretty clearly intended to indicate that they’d have it on time, not that they’d guarantee you a copy. Was anyone really genuinely “taken” by this?”

“Well that makes sense, It doesn’t say In-Stock, it says In-Store. It was In-Store at 2pm, maybe you should have gotten there at 2pm and picked up a copy.”

PS3 Europe - Honey Moon Over?

PS3 + 1up + Joystiq + Kotaku + Fanboys + PS3 Fanboy
04.05.2007 at 8:56 am

The big fanboy heart breaking news this week is the GamesIndustry.biz report that PS3 sales have fallen 82% in the UK.

“A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: “Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent.”"

On top of that sales of the top two games, Resistance and Motorstorm have dropped by over 60%.

Here’s a wrap up of what everyone is saying.

Joystiq

“What did anyone expect? Sony selling 165,000 PS3 consoles week after week? Such a drop-off is only to be expected since at least 80% of those first week sales were pre-orders made many months before.”

“The uk launch was literally a great example of “EVERYONE WHO WANTED ONE BOUGHT ONE”
and thats about it”

“That is still very good. 30,000 is more than they sell in Japan every week and I am sure it is still the best selling console in the UK this week. It’s also one third of what the 360 and Wii managed to do IN THEIR FIRST WEEK. Sorry it couldn’t break the alltime record for consoles sold in the UK two weeks in a row.”

“Expected fanboy comments: “That’s because everyone who wants one already got one lol” “599 US Dollars!” “Idiot, this is for UK sales.” “Oh. Then… 425 British Pounds!” “Idiot.” “What’s wrong with those people? PS3 is great, they should all be buying them out.” Any others I miss?”

Kotaku

“They can’t use the stock shortage line as they are everywhere at the moment. They should be quite pleased that they managed to get one to everyone that wanted/could afford one at the crazy crazy rip off price.”

“”Show me a single store in the UK with a game system, and I will give you 1200 pounds sterling”….Its sony, they will find some way to put a spin on it, good or bad, I don’t think sony really cares…”

“Only the diehard Sony fans are buying the PS3. The highly sought after “causal gamer” could not care less about the PS3 and the Cell Processor, Blu-Ray, etc…all they see is the high sticker price. GTA 3 brought these casual gamers to the PS2 in droves, but I’m not so sure that GTA IV can pull off the same trick for the PS3, especially since it will be available on the cheaper 360.”

“Maybe Sony should have done like Nintendo and purposely create a lack in the consoles, so people feel the need to buy one right away?”

“All those who wanted it have it. Now we are seeing those who wanted it but, didn’t have the money at the time hence the 25 - 30k sales. If the console was in demand then it would have sold out and continued to sell out for weeks to come. There are millions of people in the uk and indeed 3 milion of them now have DS’. This is why Sony are taking longer than expected to spin the news. They can’t talk about availability because then they look like hypocrites. They can’t claim to be shifting units because the Wii sold over 300k units in the first week alone and continues to sell well even now. There has been no lul in Wii sales at all. They sell as fast as Nintendo make them. I expect a price cut to be announced within a week or two and for this to be spun as a positive thing. Something along the lines of a manufaturing breakthrough meaning cheaper parts (probably lead by the 65nm cells). I only feel sorry for those that bought the console on day one. If sony want to take back the market, then they will have to royaly shaft those loyal fans on the price!”

PS3 Fanboy

“The sales drop is to be expected. I’m surprised that the numbers are still as high as they are. Those numbers bring the UK real close to 200,00 which i think was their innitial shipment.”

“I agree with Nick in that there is anything to worry about from these numbers. You can’t expect huge sales with the cost of the console as it is. I’d begin to worry if PS3 sales are still in the doldrums at the end ofthe year.”

“Obviously a decrease OMG!!! No decrease guys just another 165,000 people bought one, my god the media are Sony haters lol!!! True though.
Wonder what the Wii and 360 sell on average per week now, if you could show that in your blog i would appreciate it!!!”

1up

“What can anyone say? It is what it is. The problem isn’t the hardware, it isn’t what the system can or can’t do. The problem is simply the price. Its just too high. I don’t know how many people would buy a $600 Xbox360 either. I own all of the systems, for me it isn’t an issue. But I know for a lot of folks this gen is a one or the other situation. Most of my single system owning friends have a 360.”

“5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Here come the Wiitards & Xboys. Bring it on bitchs !”

“So this is what it looks like when fanboys from each company go at eachothers throat, Lol! :)”

“Its just a sad day that these fools dont see it. Look at the signs you zombies!! Trade in your PS3’s and get a 360 or a Wii.. Its already too late to trade in your PSP’s.. and soon it wont even matter! Dont you see the fall of the name PLAYSTATION???”

“All I hear is excuses. Well the PS3 is selling better than the 360 during the same launch window. Yet they refuse to aknowledge that the 360 in the US and Europe is doing very well, that the 3rd major territory Japan is Anti-Microsoft, that the 360 had major shortages at launch and for about 6-8 months afterwards. All that considered plus the fact that the 360 had average to poor launch titles. I would say the 360 is doing quite well. Also dont forget that the Wii is whippin that Ass and it launched at roughly the same time as the PS3. Then I hear PS3 fanboys saying stuff like DMC4, or VF5, or Ace Combat, etc… weren’t that good on the Playstation, or they were gonna suck anyways, etc… STFU U insecure little maggots. U know dang well if Halo3 or Forza 2, or Mass Effect, or Gears of War etc came over to the PS3 U would cream your panties… Get over it the 360 rocks and its a good thing that these games went multiplatform. Why should I be forced to pay for Blue-Ray and Cell to enjoy these games? Learn how to share fuckers. Selfish pricks. I’m not mad that those games will be on the PS3. WTF!!! This is classic Playstation Polesmoker attitude right here: All I hear is wait till Home comes out U will see. Wait till MGS4 or FF13 comes out U will see. Wait till 2008. How much longer do we have to wait. In the US and Japan we waited a year for the damn thing to launch after the 360 was already available. Europe waited almost a year and a half. We waited that long to get the same gaming experience if not less than what the 360 already offers and U want us to pay $200.00 more for the PS3. Plus the online service blows Ass compared to Live, and the game library sucks compared to the 360. Ya great idea, lets keep waiting. No thank you. I would rather “Jump In” with a 360 right now, then “Play Beyond” with a PS3 in 2008. Good night Sony Sausage Smugglers!!!!!”

“So here all of the 360 Sony hating fanboys congregating!!! No where to be seen on the “Microsoft Defends the 120GB HD’s Price” NEWS POST!! LOL!!! I guess whatever is convenient for all of you fanboys works.”

April Fools Sucks

It’s amazing after everything I read about the state of video game media coverage media outlets still refuse to be above April Fools. Imagine if the “real” media reported fake world news all day. I hope no one would think that is funny so why deal with it in gaming news? My RSS feeds were lit up with pointless story after pointless story wasting a good amount of my time and the time of the people that have to read it and write it. Time that could have been better spent on something much more important or informative.
