Next Generation defends Sony

PS3 + Next Generation

Next Generation is defending Sony’s recent decision to drop hardware backwards compatibility from the European PS3. The article claims, amongst other things, that backwards compatibility is not an important enough reason people buy a console to worry about it.

“But on a list of ‘reasons to buy a games console,’ backwards compatibility comes pretty low down; certainly lower than quality of current and future game libraries, quality of online services, benefits such as a Blu-ray drive; price etc.”

Personally, I know a number of people who’ve recently bought a Wii which represents the first console they’ve ever owned. While they wait for the next big Wii release they’ve been more than happy dipping into the GameCube catalogue.

Anyway, my personal problem with the situation is Sony’s year or so of chest beating claiming their hardware solution was better than Microsoft’s software emulation yet now they’re going down the same road.
