Console Wars - Reuters

Xbox360 + PS3 + Wii + Reuters

Reuters has up an article concerning the state of the console battle. After taking a look at this Kotaku asked their readers who they think will come out on top. Here’s a small look at some of the replies.

“It’ll be the console with the coolest games.”

“When the dust settles, it will be the PS3, hands down. I’m no fan of the way SONY handles their business, but you can’t deny the strength of their product. Without Japan and Europe, the 360 doesn’t stand a chance (at winning, they could still end up turning profit). The Wii will do better than the GC, but second place will have to do. In four years, the PS3 will be at a mass market pricepoint; it will have a strong library of AAA titles; and a bolstering online community. No competition. Hell, I see myself owning one by next summer.”

“Well eventually all the consoles will have a strong base, but its cleary that the 360 and the wii will compete for the number one, and the PS3 for its price mostly, the one that may change gaming history is the DS, at this sales rate it may beat the PS2 in a few years…”

“PS3 will win, at least here in the UK/Europe. “PlayStation” is just the name for “videogames” as a whole over here, the brand is stronger than Xbox or Nintendo by far. You only have to look at the PS3s presence in the top 10 games and the strong first-weekends sales to see that this is PS3 country now.”

“I vote Wii. I’m not a “fanboy” or anything, I just prefer Nintendo systems. I like the simplistic nature of some games, yet I can still find a few good, hard games if I want.”

“I would buy a Wii. But. I have a HDTV. I didn’t buy it to play or use SDTV content.”

Car Games Cause Crashes

If we’ve learned anything it’s that video games are why evil exists in the world. It’s the cause of violence, the cause of poor grades and now the cause of bad driving.

Reuters is reporting a new study out of Germany that people that play car racing games may be more likely to drive recklessly.

“Driving actions in these games often include competitive and reckless driving, speeding and crashing into other cars or pedestrians, or performing risky stunts with the vehicle. In short, most actions in racing games imply a very high risk of having an accident or severe crash in a highly realistic virtual road traffic environment,”

“Risk-acceptance is one of the most prominent and important factors in the discussion of the origin of accidents caused by young drivers,”

True or not it’s amazing they target only video games and not other types of input. What is the effect of watching a car chase (Blue Brothers anyone) and then driving? How about the effect of getting into an argument and then driving? Why just focus on video games, oh yeah, that’s right, it will make for better news.

I officially exist! According to Reuters “Video games aren’t just for the kids anymore.” With 37 percent of adults who go online owning a console and 16 percent owning a portable gaming device. Out of that 37 percent the majority (71 percent) are married and 66 percent have at least one child in the household.

“As game consoles have become increasingly sophisticated, families have incorporated them into their centralized home media centers, which include the television, digital recording device, digital music player and the PC,”
